If you've ever tried to encourage a friend or family member to join you on the yoga mat, you've likely encountered a wide array of inventive explanations for why yoga just isn't their cup of herbal tea!
From "I'm not flexible enough" to "I don't have the right yoga pants," people come up with some real gems.
In this blog, we'll take a lighthearted journey through 16 of the most common and amusing reasons people use to avoid yoga, while offering some friendly nudges to help them overcome these comical barriers and experience the transformative benefits of this ancient practice.
So, roll out your yoga mat, and let's explore the colorful world of yoga excuses together. Namaste! 🧘♀️😄
1. "I'm not flexible enough." - The classic excuse I’ve heard a thousand times in 25 years and why I wrote The New Yoga, even though yoga is meant to improve flexibility over time.
2. "I don't have the right yoga pants." - Because clearly, the key to a successful practice is having the perfect yoga wardrobe!
3. "I'm too busy." - As if finding 10 minutes to stretch and breathe is impossible in a busy schedule.
4. "I can't touch my toes." – another common one that ignores the fact that yoga is precisely how you work on such limitations.

5. "Yoga is too slow for me." - For those who prefer high-intensity workouts and think yoga is just for "slow" people. (They haven't tried my fun classes where high intensity might mean holding a timed plank pose, getting that elusive alignment correct or simply staying focussed for more than 10 seconds!)
6. "I don't have a yoga mat." - Because it's impossible to practice yoga without a special piece of rubber or PVC.
7. "I'm too old for yoga." - Yoga is for all ages, but some might use age as an excuse.
8. "Yoga is just for hippies." - An outdated stereotype that ignores the diverse range of people who practice yoga.
9. "I don't have a serene and quiet space." - You don't need a mountaintop retreat; a small corner of your living room will do.
10. "I'll start tomorrow." - The procrastinator's favorite line.

11. "I tried it once and fell over." - As if balance and stability weren't skills that can be developed with practice.
12. "I'm afraid I'll fart during class." - A common worry that many yoga newbies have. Sometimes with justification!
13. "I don't want to chant 'Om' in public." - Some people feel self-conscious about the spiritual aspects of yoga.

14. "I don't like incense." - Associating yoga with incense and new-age cliches. There are many styles of yoga for every taste.
15. "I'm too self-conscious about my body." - Overcoming body image issues can be a real barrier to starting yoga.
16. "I'll get bored." - Assuming that yoga is always just a series of slow and repetitive movements.

Of course, none of this applies to you! So unroll that mat stored in the garage and . . .
